The composition of die casting release agent is varies of organic and inorganic solvents are synthesizing together.
It can solve the mould release problems during die casting production.
The following is the composition of several common die casting release agents:
1. Oil-based mould release agent
2. Water-based mould release agent
3. Powder mould releasing agent
4. Other special mould releasing agents
1. Oil-based mould release agent:
This type of release agent consists mainly of mineral or synthetic oils, silicone oils, and lubricating additives.
An oil-based release agent may contain 70-98 per cent solvents, 1-10 per cent high-viscosity mineral or synthetic oils, and 1-5 per cent lubricity performance additives.
In addition, silicone oils are used to improve their high temperature resistance.
2. Water-based release agents:
Release agents Water-based type usually consist of a base material (e.g. mineral oil, silicone oil, wax), an emulsifier and water.
Water-based release agents may contain 10-30% dimethicones, 5-15% modified silicone oils, 5-20% wax components, 4-15% surfactants, 1-3% rust and corrosion inhibitors, and 0.1-1% biocides.
3. Powder mould releasing agent:
Powder release agents are mainly composing of wax, quartz, mica, talc and graphite components.
These powders melt and adhere to the surface of the mould after being heated in the mould cavity and play a lubricating role.
Powder release agents have good chemical stability, are not easy to decompose at high temperatures, and will not cause corrosion on the mould.
4. Other special release agents:
Some special release agents may contain ingredients such as modified bamboo charcoal, sodium alginate, beeswax, graphene and so on.
These ingredients help to improve the storage life and effectiveness of the release agent.
Choosing the right mould release agent is critical to ensuring the quality of the die casting.
Different release agents are suitable for different mould temperatures and die casting conditions.
So the formulation and use of the release agent needs to be selected and adjusted according to the specific application scenario.
Types of components in oil-based release agents for die casting
The components of oil-based die casting release agents are various types of organic solvents.
There are six main components:
1.Base oil
2. Graphite
3. High temperature adhesive
4. Silicone oil
5. Additives
6.Solvent
1.Base oil:
The base components of oil-based release agents are usually mineral or synthetic oils.
These base oils have good lubricating properties and provide the necessary lubrication.
2.Graphite:
Graphite is one of the important ingredients in oil-based release agents.
It has good lubricating properties and is effective in preventing metallic fluids from adhering to the mould surface.
3. High temperature binder:
Some oil-based release agents also contain high-temperature binder.
To ensure high adhesion and high lubricity on high temperature moulds (e.g. above 300°C), thus preventing scorching.
4. Silicone oils:
Silicone oils are adding to some oil-based release agents to improve their stability and lubricity at high temperatures.
The addition of silicone oils helps to improve the performance of the release agent under high temperature conditions.
5. Additives:
In order to enhance the lubricating properties, additives with lubricating properties are usually added to oil-based release agents.
The percentage of these additives is generally between 1 and 5%.
6. Solvents:
Oil-based release agents may also contain specific solvents.
Such as petroleum-based hydrocarbon solvents, these solvents help to regulate the viscosity and flash point of the release agent.
Making it suitable for different applications.
The composition of oil-based release agents is complex and varied.
The main components include base oils, graphite, high temperature binders, silicone oils, additives and solvents.
These components work together to ensure effective lubrication and release during the die casting process.
Types of components in Water-based release agents for die casting
The components of a water-based die casting release agent consist primarily of a base material, an emulsifier and water.
These components work together to achieve the effects of mould release, lubrication and cooling.
1. Base material:
Base material is the core component of water-based mould release agent.
They typically include oils, greases, waxes, silicones and polymers.
These materials have good lubricating and release properties.
Silicone oils are widely used for their high temperature stability and lubricating properties.
Oxidised polyethylene waxes are also considered to be excellent base materials because of their excellent lubrication and thermal stability.
2. Emulsifiers:
The function of emulsifiers is to ensure that the active ingredient is uniformly dispersed in the aqueous phase to form a stable emulsion.
Commonly used emulsifiers include a combination of Span80 and OP-10, which improves emulsion stability.
The choice of emulsifier is critical to improving the performance of the release agent as they reduce the difficulty of emulsification and improve thermal stability.
3. Water:
Water acts as a solvent to dilute the base material and other additives so that they form a uniform protective film on the mould surface.
Water-based release agents usually contain a large amount of water, more than 95%.
4. Other additives:
In addition to the above main components, water-based release agents may also contain some auxiliary additives.
Such as extreme pressure additives, rust inhibitors, antimicrobial agents, etc..
These additives can further enhance the performance of the release agent, e.g. increase its high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance.
Water-based mould release agents are widely used in metal die casting process due to their advantages of being environmentally friendly, cost-effective, non-polluting as well as having a bright and clean casting surface.
Especially in aluminium alloy die casting, water-based mould release agent has become the mainstream choice because of its good mould release and cooling effect.
Water-based mould release agent in the use of the process need to pay attention to the concentration, mould temperature and spraying method, in order to avoid mould damage and die casting quality problems.
